Neighbourhood Speed Limit Review

The Standing Policy Committee on Transportation and Transit approved the following recommendations regarding the residential speed limit:

1. Changing the unposted speed limit in Calgary from 50 km/h to 40 km/h
2. To post a 50 km/h speed limit on most Collector roadways

I was one of seven Councillors who supported the recommendations, which were passed 7-3. The map below shows a draft of Ward 8 streets that would see a change to their speed limit. Collector roads (and greater) would not be impacted. Click it for a larger PDF version.

The reports presented at Committee show how societal costs would be reduced with lower residential speed limits, which lower the rates of injury collisions. You may use the ETA tool time estimator to see how little it will impact your daily driving.

Council will hold a public hearing on Monday, November 2 to discuss the proposed bylaw. Visit the City of Calgary website for more information.
