Community Field Redevelopment
The community artificial turf pilot project strategically located at the Genesis Centre is in alignment with The City’s objective of providing high quality, accessible and affordable recreational opportunities for all Calgarians.
The artificial turf field includes upgraded lighting and will be in use from approximately April to November each year, weather permitting.
The project also includes rehabilitation of the north natural turf field. Together, these fields will extend the playing season and increase accessibility to recreation opportunities for residents across Calgary.
Several additional amenities will be added to the project site in Spring 2022 and will be ready in the summer of 2022. Additional amenities:
- Hard play surface which includes a basketball court similar to “The Bounce” in East Village
- Inclusive playground
- Community gathering space for a wide range of ages, from youth to seniors
- Additional pathway connections
The high-quality multipurpose field is the first artificial turf field in northeast Calgary and the first artificial turf field available for community use in the city, staying open for the public when not booked.
Development of this multi-purpose artificial turf field will benefit sport through:
- Increased field capacity
- Increased sport participation
- Enhanced participant and athlete safety
- Extended playing season
- Increased sport tourism opportunities in Calgary
Capital investment in this project will generate 33 full-time jobs (based on Infrastructure Calgary’s economic impact assessment model).
The design of the field will minimize direct light onto neighbouring properties through fixture design and configuration, tree planting and light level testing.
The contractor will adhere to The City’s Community Standards Bylaw, 5M2004 for hours of operation, material storage and construction best practices, including dust mitigation. If you have questions, please contact 311.
The cost for this project is estimated at $6 million. Funding will be provided by:
- City of Calgary Corporate Fiscal Sustainability Reserve – $2 million
- Genesis Centre – $2 million
