Library Services
The Calgary Public Library empowers our communities by connecting Calgarians to ideas, experiences, and inspiration. Calgary's libraries are community hubs that promote learning, discussion, invention, and action. We want to help create a sense of belonging, empowerment in civic decision-making, an ability to empathize with others, personal meaning, capacity and connectedness, and a positive, enthusiastic and hopeful outlook on the future.

What we heard
You’ve said you want to build connections, participate in collaborative action, and deepen understanding of your community through the library. You’re looking for opportunities for personal change and adaptation, to satisfy your curiosity and engage in lifelong discovery. The majority of our customers were satisfied with staff, in-person/online experiences, and collections. Almost all Calgarians have a sense of pride in the Library.
Council direction
Council has directed and supports several goals for Library Services:
- early childhood literacy
- access to information and training for Calgarians to acquire new skills, contacts, and network
- be an enabling resource for Calgary businesses, and support the integration, education and socialization of new Calgary arrivals
- be welcoming gathering places for all, connecting us to important neighbourhood and civic initiatives
- offer outreach programs to connect isolated or mobility-challenged Calgarians
- reconciliation: bring the message of cultural humility and competency, understanding and sensitivity
