COVID-19 - Prevent the spread of illness

Updated July 31, 2020

Staying open is in your hands as we head into fall and prepare to go back to school and work. Stay 2 metres apart, wear a face covering when you can’t, wash your hands and stay home when you feel unwell.

Prevent the spread of COVID-19 with a few simple hygiene habits. This applies to when you are using City facilities or services like Calgary Transit.

Hygiene and prevention tips

Maintain physical distance from others
Limit your contact with others by staying home as much as possible. When you are outside of your home, maintain at least 2 metres (the length of a bicycle) from others. Learn more about physical distancing outside.

Wear a face covering
Wear a face covering in public settings where physical distancing measures are difficult to maintain. There are multiple types of  face coverings that can be used, depending on the situation. For more information see Use of Face Coverings to Help Slow the Spread of COVID-19.

Wash your hands frequently
This is the single most effective way of preventing the spread of disease. Use hand sanitizer when you can’t wash your hands with soap and warm water. The City provides multiple hand sanitizing stations in our facilities.

Catch your germs
Cover your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze by using the inside of your elbow or your shoulder.

Avoid touching your face
Keep your hands away from your eyes, ears, nose and mouth.

Practice healthy habits
Eat well, exercise daily and get enough rest to help support your immune system.

Self-isolate if sick
If you are experiencing fever, cough, difficulty breathing or other flu-like symptoms, stay home and away from others. Take the COVID-19 self-assessment. If you have questions or concerns about your health, contact Health Link 811.

Choose alternative greetings to handshakes and high fives:
Give a wave from at least 2 metres away.

Using elevators
Do your part to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. This includes:

  • Facing the wall inside the elevator
  • Limit the number of people to 3 in each elevator
  • Avoid crowding by waiting for the next elevator
  • Avoid touching your face after touching the buttons
  • Wash or sanitize your hands after leaving the elevator
