The City of Calgary won’t be hosting fireworks on New Year’s Eve. It is one way we can do our part to reduce the spread of COVID-19.

What’s different this year

It’s important to find a safe way to celebrate New Year’s Eve and the holiday season. Keep your family safe and healthy by finding creative ways to mark the occasion. Make sure to follow all provincial health measures.

What you can do to mark New Year’s Eve

Enjoy the outdoors

Stay busy with indoor activities

  • Plan a virtual event such as a video chat countdown with your family and friends, share your New Year’s resolutions, or reflect on 2020
  • Make a music playlist of your favourite songs from 2020 and have a dance party with the people in your immediate household
  • Learn about different cultures’ New Year traditions, have each person research a tradition and share
  • Set up an online game night
  • Make a time capsule for 2020, share what you are putting in it with family and friends over video chat or with the people in your immediate household
  • Create a photo journal of your 2020 year
  • For your New Year’s resolution, challenge your family, friends and neighbours to a good deed like donating to the food bank or helping neighbours
  • Make your own noisemakers to celebrate the countdown
  • Create a “wishing wall” by writing your wishes for the new year on colourful stickies, then cut or tear it up into confetti for midnight
  • Decorate your house or yard
  • Help support Calgary businesses (e.g. order delivery or takeout from a local restaurant, purchase local goods, etc.)

Help out fellow Calgarians

  • Donate to the food bank or charity that is important to you
  • Clear out your 2020 clutter and donate your extra clothes and home items
  • Be a snow angel and shovel  snow for your neighbours
