Before booking a park, pathway or greenspace

With the recent easing of health restrictions, we are currently experiencing an increase in park booking enquiries and applications. We appreciate your patience and support as we attempt to manage and process these as efficiently as possible. Please note that event applications currently take up to 8 weeks to process.

COVID-19 booking update

  • The City is currently still accepting applications for greenspace bookings that align with current COVID-19 health restrictions.
  • It is the permit holder’s responsibility to ensure they are aware of and understand the current COVID-19 restrictions and that all aspects of their event or park booking adhere to these.
  • Any permit previously issued by Parks will be considered null and void if the permit holder and/or participants do not adhere to current Alberta COVID-19 health restrictions in place at the time the event occurs.

For information on festivals and events bookings, please visit the Festivals and Events page.

Please follow all mandatory health measures.

Calgary Recreation facilitates the bookings of open public park spaces for various outdoor activities, including weddings, fundraising events, performances,walks/runs, etc.

Any greenspace or park maintained by Calgary Parks may be booked providing the appropriate Parks region has given permission to do so. These include: major parks, regional and local pathways, small miscellaneous greenspaces, skateparks, and downtown park plazas. Picnic sites and community playfields can also be booked for purposes outside of the realm of their normal or intended use.

This does not include Prince’s Island Park, as it is only available for booking large annual festivals and events.

Booking any one of these facilities requires a special event permit.

What is a special event?

A special event is an event that requires additional authorization by City staff due to its potential impact on City facilities. This includes but is not limited to:

  • Set up and take down of tables, tents, etc.
  • Set up of temporary stages or other structures (i.e. risers)
  • Posting banners or signs
  • Amplified or acoustic performances (music)
  • Need for meeting rooms or storage
  • Selling merchandise/commercial activity
  • Fundraising event
  • Walk, run or marathon

But does not include:

  • Fireworks, open flame or other pyrotechnics
  • Tents, stages and/or other structures exceed a combined 600 square feet
  • Alcohol sales or service

Events that include any of these 4 instances are considered a Festival Event and must adhere to a separate evaluation process. You must contact Event Services at (403)476-4323 or no less than 90 days prior to your planned event for information and booking. Visit planning a festival for more information.
