My children have been sent home from school, but I need to work. How can I work and care for my children?

Special arrangements can be considered if they meet operational needs and have the approval of your supervisor and union. These could include adjusted work hours, remote work and part-time work in addition to using leave plan balances or unpaid leave. Talk to your supervisor about options that could work for you.

If you need to take a temporary unpaid leave of absence, financial assistance may be available. Please visit the Government of Canada’s Canada’s COVID-19 Economic Response Plan and the Government of Alberta’s COVID-19 Support for Employers and Employees.

It’s important to note that temporary leaves do have some implications. For instance, you need to pre-pay benefits for leaves greater than 30 days. Make sure you talk to your supervisor so you understand all the implications.
