Plazas & event spaces

Some Green Line stations will be designed to be more than just stations. They can also be community hubs with lively spaces for people to gather and provide opportunities for events.

We have explored the use of Green Line transit stations with plazas and Park and Ride facilities as spaces to host things like:

  • Small business pop-ups like food trucks and temporary tents
  • Pop up art installations
  • Farmers markets
  • Trade shows
  • Busking, live music or entertainment

Stations with plaza & event spaces

Green Line station areas have been reviewed for their potential as future event sites. For example, Ramsay/Inglewood and Lynnwood/Millican stations have great potential for events based on:

  • The station design
  • Expected ridership numbers
  • Being a transit hub
  • Being close to cultural & recreational facilities, natural areas and food/retail businesses
  • Land-use around the station (future Transit Oriented Development locations)
  • Having favourable sun and wind conditions

Station designs are being updated to provide spaces for a wide variety of events that could benefit the community and transit riders. Bookings for special events on transit property are currently managed by Calgary Transit. They will continue to do so when Green Line is operational.

July 2016: Sunnyside LRT station was transformed into Platform 9 3/4 at King's Cross Station. This was to celebrate a Harry Potter-themed event in Kensington.

Summer 2021: Local food stands pop-up at LRT stations across the city, selling fresh, locally grown produce.
