Municipal Development Plan and Calgary Transportation Plan review
The City is reviewing its Municipal Development Plan (MDP) and Calgary Transportation Plan (CTP). The MDP and CTP are The City’s long-range land use and transportation plans that look 60 years into the future, when Calgary’s population is expected to reach over two million people. The Plans help shape how the communities we live and work in grow, develop and evolve over time.
Next 20: Making Calgary better for more people
Our city has changed since these plans were developed in 2009. New factors like population and technology trends, on-demand services and shared-economies will have a growing impact on how and where people live and work. They also impact how The City delivers services for citizens over the next 20 years.
The review is an opportunity for us to check-in on our long-range plans to see what’s working well and contributing to the quality of life many Calgarians enjoy, and what needs to be updated or changed to make this a reality for more Calgarians over the next 20 years. It also allows us to adapt to and incorporate new technologies and trends.
The review is in its final phase. If you want to review the proposed amendments and provide feedback please visit Calgary.ca/Next20 to participate in an online survey.
Both Council and City Administration acknowledge COVID-19 is confronting Calgarians with significant challenges and concerns. Our citizens must have the ability to focus their energy and attention on these issues and themselves, at this time. In response, the closing date of our online survey was extended to provide citizens with additional time to review the project materials and provide feedback. We will accept feedback until June 26, 2020. Stakeholder feedback will be incorporated into updated versions of the MDP and CTP where appropriate.

Approved in 2009, the MDP and CTP strive to create an environment where The City can provide services that Calgarians desire, in a way that is financially sustainable, while protecting our natural environment and supporting a prosperous economy.
The MDP and CTP are outcomes of a citizen-engagement process called Plan It Calgary. From 2006 to 2009, over 6,000 Calgarians participated to help shape the vision for creating land use and transportation plans for our city.
The goal of Plan It Calgary was to set out a long-term direction for sustainable growth that would accommodate another 1.3 million people over the next 60 years.
