Mobility trends

We continuously monitor Calgary’s transportation mobility system to understand how people move around our city and make changes to our services, as necessary.

A Mobility Trends Report was compiled monthly to illustrate changes to mobility volumes due to COVID-19. Now that restrictions are lifting, this report is compiled quarterly.

The report includes metrics on auto, walking and wheeling volumes, transit, carshare, parking and rideshare data, and goods movement truck volumes.

Why is this data important?

The data collected helps us understand how COVID-19 is impacting our transportation network and what the “new” normal may look like moving forward. This allows us to adapt our services to meet the changing needs of citizens.

For example, in 2020 we:

  • Encouraged physical distancing measures by converting road space to space for people to walk and wheel;
  • Revised traffic signals to eliminate the need for people who walk to press the crosswalk button;
  • Reduced transit service as ridership decreased;
  • Accelerated construction projects by taking advantage of lower vehicle volumes;
  • Provided temporary 30 minute free parking spaces to allow for pick-up/drop-off at businesses; and
  • Provided temporary space for sidewalk patios.

This information is shared with other jurisdictions and transportation professionals to help learn from each other and support citizens' needs.

This information is also presented quarterly to Council.

Why is this information important to share with Calgarians?

We want to demonstrate that we are building towards a Calgary that works for all Calgarians. It’s important that Calgarians understand why we make the decisions we do.

August 2022 Update

Due to the easing of COVID-19 restrictions and return to normal patterns, the July 2022 Mobility Trends report will be the final report of this type for the COVID-19 pandemic.
