About the Southwest Calgary Ring Road

The Southwest Calgary Ring Road (SWRR), a project of the Province of Alberta, is one of the last sections of the Calgary Ring Road, which will circle the city when completed. Planning for the Calgary Ring Road began in the 1970s, and the northwest, northeast, and southeast sections of the road (known as Stoney Trail) are completed and in use. Construction on the southwest section is currently underway, and will open to traffic in fall of 2021. Construction on the west section of the Ring Road is scheduled to begin in 2018.

When the Calgary Ring Road is complete, it will offer 101 kilometers of free-flow travel around Calgary and contribute to safe and easy movement of goods and people in and around the city.

The Government of Alberta is responsible for the design, construction, management and operation of Calgary's Ring Road, while the City of Calgary is responsible for the design and construction of street connections to the SWRR, road improvements, and intersection improvements, because they are located within city limits.

Southwest Ring Road Schedule & Current Status

  • 2005-2009 - Meetings to get public feedback
  • November 2013 - Land transfer agreement with Tsuut’ina Nation
  • Summer 2016 - Preliminary construction of the SWRR began
  • Spring 2017 - Major construction began
  • Fall 2021 - Expected completion of the SWRR (open to traffic)

The SWRR will go from Highway 8 (near Elbow Springs Golf Course) to Macleod Trail S.E. The project includes rebuilding Glenmore Trail between Sarcee Trail and east of 37 Street S.W.

It consists of 31 kilometres of six- and eight-lane divided highway, 14 interchanges, 47 bridges, one road flyover, one railway crossing, one tunnel, and three river crossings over the Elbow River and Fish Creek.

Elbow Bridge Crossing

The SWRR includes the construction of a highway bridge crossing over the Elbow River. This crossing is within the Transportation Utility Corridor (TUC), upstream of Weaselhead Park and The City's Glenmore Reservoir.

Some concerns were raised on the bridge design should another 2013-level flood take place. These resources address those concerns.
