Items that are corrosive, flammable, poisonous or explosive are considered household hazardous waste and don’t belong in your carts. In Calgary, you can dispose of these items at our household hazardous waste drop-off locations (residential use only).

Hazardous waste will have danger symbols like this on the container:

Corrosive

Flammable

Poisonous

Explosive

These products:

  • Can eat away materials when contact occurs.
  • Can ignite and cause a fire.
  • Are toxic or poisonous, either immediately or over a long period of time.
  • Can be explosive and/or reactive and release poisonous fumes when exposed to air, water or other chemicals.

Common household hazardous waste includes aerosols, automotive fluids, cleaners, fertilizers, weed killers, paint, propane tanks and more.

Hazardous waste requires safe handling and must be disposed of the right way.

Business or industrial waste

If you are a business owner or industrial operator, and you have hazardous waste, please call The City of Calgary at 311 or contact a local hauler for disposal options.

You can also find disposal options for large volumes of certain items like paint, asbestos or industrial waste on our Waste Diversion for Business page.

What does The City do with the hazardous waste?

All collected materials are recycled or safety treated and disposed of at specialized treatment facilities in Canada and the United States. These facilities have been approved by Alberta Environment and Alberta Recycling Management Authority.

Items including used motor oil, used glycol (anti-freeze), propane tanks, vehicle batteries, used oil containers, paint and paint containers are sold to private companies for recycling.
