Snow and ice plugging your storm drain

If it's safe and possible to do, we recommend that you clear ice and snow that's blocking your storm drain to help water flow. If you are unable to clear the ice and snow yourself, please call 311 or fill out the online 311 request below.

Tips to protect your home and your family:

  1. Shovel snow away from the foundation of your home and window wells to prevent seepage into your basement.
  2. Check furnace and exhaust vents to make sure snow and ice are not blocking them. Carbon monoxide can build up within your home as a result.
  3. Ensure your downspouts (eavestroughs) are clear and pointed away from your home/foundation.
  4. Clear snow away from the storm drain.
  5. If the storm drain is iced over, do not try to remove it yourself. Call 311 and a crew will clear the ice for you. Don’t chip away at ice on storm drains as you may damage it or injure yourself.
  6. If water pools by the storm drain, give it 90 minutes to drain. The City of Calgary has special devices in the storm drains that allow the water to drain slowly and not overload the stormwater system.
  7. If you see pooled water on a roadway, be careful – don’t drive through deep water as you can’t see potential risks that may not be safe.
  8. Check the function of your sump pump.
Please note: Do not attempt to clean a catch basin if it's submerged in water, if the drain is full of debris or if the grate is damaged. Please call 311.

Homeowner responsibility

Your property’s drainage systems (eavestroughs, downspouts, lot grading, landscaping) interact with the public drainage systems (roadways, storm drains, stormpipes, storm ponds). Homeowners have responsibilities that are detailed in the Lot Grading Bylaw, the Stormwater Bylaw  and

  • Maintaining positive drainage on your lot - away from structures without adverse effect to their neighbors or public property.
  • Ensuring prohibited substances do not enter storm drains from your lot. There are substantial fines for the dumping or pouring material down storm drains
