Who can book a gymnasium?

Gymnasium

School gymnasiums are available for public non-profit use outside of regular school hours.

If your organization offers recreational activities for children and youth, you can apply for a school gymnasium rental subsidy through United Way’s Upstart program.

Things to know about booking and using gymnasiums

  • It is important to review the School use and facility regulations and the School use equipment regulations before booking.
  • Calgary Recreation books schools for community use on behalf of the Calgary Board of Education and the Calgary Catholic School District.
  • The booking of a school gymnasium is available first to existing users, then to the general public on a first-come-basis. Each session has a "public Day' where after all historical space used by renewing groups has been confirmed, what is left is released to the public.
  • New bookings must be submitted a minimum of 14 days prior to the first date requested.
  • Organizations or individuals booking school space are required to carry general liability insurance in the amount not less than two million dollars. It must be inclusive for any one occurrence and such insurance shall name the City of Calgary and the respective school board as additional insured. The insurance must not have a participants exclusion.
  • Booking of schools is limited to not-for-profit groups.
  • The following are restricted sports and not permitted in schools: floor hockey, ultimate frisbee, ringette, ball hockey and cricket.
  • Groups are required to take a copy of their permit to each of their booking.
