Striking is a skill where you hit one object with another. For example, a golf club “strikes” the golf ball or your hand “strikes” a volley ball. This skill combines aiming, coordination, timing and judging how much power to use.

Helps you:

  • Give high fives!
  • Avoid getting hit by flying objects
  • Perform in racket sports, baseball, hockey, golf, volleyball, etc.

How to do it

Find an open area to practice. Make sure you can move around without hitting anything breakable.

  • Stand with your feet shoulder width apart. Place a soft ball or balloon in front of you. Grip a stick of some sort (e.g. broom handle, pool noodle, etc.) with both hands.
  • Slightly bend your knees, straighten your arms and keep your eyes on the ball.
  • Slowly swing the stick back until it is just past your foot. Stop.
  • Keeping your eyes on the ball, start to swing the stick forward.
  • When you contact the ball, keep swinging the stick forward until it is just past your other foot.

Challenge yourself

  • Try to get the ball into a target (like a cup or basket) a small distance away.
  • Make the target further away
  • Use balls made from different materials and different weights.
