Every five years, the Transportation Department collects information about the work that Calgarians do through the Place of Work Survey. This information is used to effectively plan future communities and transportation improvements. This survey helps us understand the type of work people do, where jobs are located, and what industries are performing well in Calgary. Where you live, work and how you travel are closely connected, understanding this connection helps us plan a vibrant city.
Randomly selected households will be asked to provide information about the work they do, including their occupation, the industry they work in, and their work location. Your privacy is very important to us. The information provided through the Place of Work Survey is protected by the Alberta Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act and will not be shared.

- What is the Place of Work Survey?
The Place of Work Survey is a short survey asked at the same time as the Civic Census to collect information about the work Calgarians do.
- Why is this survey important?
This survey allows transportation and land use planners to forecast future job locations across Calgary. This information helps us effectively plan future communities and transportation improvements.
- Is the survey mandatory?
No, the survey is voluntary. You can exit the survey at any time.
- Who do I contact for more information?
If you have any questions or concerns, you can contact the Place of Work Survey Team at PlaceOfWorkSurvey@calgary.ca or 403-268-5396. Both are monitored from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m., Monday – Friday. We will respond to messages within two business days.

- How can I participate in the survey?
There are two ways you can participate in the Place of Work Survey:
- After completing the Civic Census online you will be automatically redirected to the Place of Work Survey.
- After completing the Civic Census with a census taker, 10% of households will be asked to participate in the Place of Work Survey. The census taker will let you know if your household has been selected.
- Who in my household should participate in the survey?
Anyone 15 years of age or older that is employed should complete the Place of Work Survey. The survey will automatically generate the correct number of surveys based on the number of employed people in your household.
- How do I complete the survey online?
After you complete the Civic Census, you will automatically be redirected to the Place of Work Survey. Please read the instructions before starting the survey.
- I don’t have time to do the survey now, can I access the survey later?
No. Once you have completed the Civic Census online your household code will no longer be valid. The Place of Work Survey needs to be completed immediately after the Civic Census.
- What is an occupation and why is it important?
Your occupation is what you do at your work. It can include roles like sales clerks, electricians, engineers and teachers. It is important because different occupations are located in different places across the city, which impacts the transportation choices people make.

- What is an industry and why is it important?
An industry refers to the kind of business activities that your employer does. For example, your occupation may be in Sales and Service but you could work in a retail store in the “Retail Trade” industry, or you could work for a telecommunications company in the “Information and Cultural Services” industry. Different industries are also located in different areas across the city, which impacts the transportation choices people make.

- What is a work place type and why is it important?
A work place type is the kind of location you work at. It may be a fixed location that you go to every day, or the location may change from day to day. Different locations impact our transportation choices.
- Why do you need to know how many hours I work?
This information is used to determine whether you work full time or part time. The definition of full time or part time work can change over time. As this survey is done every five years, knowing your hours worked allows us to be flexible and ensure the information is useful for as long as possible.
- Why is my company name important?
Your company name is used to confirm industry classifications and work place locations.
- Why is my work address important?
Your work location tells us where a job of your occupation and industry is located. When combined with all of the other survey responses, this helps us understand how jobs are located around the city and helps us determine how travel patterns may change over time.
- Why do you need to know how many jobs I have?
The number of jobs is used to estimate the total number of jobs in the city. The number of jobs someone has also influences their transportation choices.
- Can I review my results before submitting my information?
Yes. Once you have completed all of the questions you will be taken to a summary page where you can review your responses. The survey should be completed for all members of your household who are 15 years of age or older and employed. After you have completed your survey, please fill out the survey for all other employed members of your household.
- How do I submit my data?
Once surveys have been completed for all of the employed members of your household, click SUBMIT on the summary page to submit your data.
