  • Plastic jugs and bottles
  • Bags, packaging and food containers
  • Food cans and foil
  • Glass jars and bottles

Learn what can be recycled or print our recycling guide. See what items you cannot put in your blue cart.

If you're not sure what to do with an item, check out our online recycling and disposal search tool.

How do I use my blue cart?

Put items loose in your cart. Don't put items in garbage or blue recycling bags. The only exceptions are shredded paper and stretchy plastic bags which need to be bagged into separate plastic bags and tied closed.

If you have extra recyclables, hang on to them for next's week collection or bring them to a community recycling depot. Please don't leave items next to your cart. Learn about preparing your recyclables.

When your cart is full, set it out by 7 a.m. on your collection day. See how to place your cart.

How often are blue carts collected?

Your blue cart will be collected with your green cart once a week on the same day. View your collection schedule.

Who receives a blue cart?

We provide blue carts to single family homes up to and including four units, as long as they are not part of a multi-unit complex, such as an apartment or condominium.

Blue cart size: The blue cart is approximately 107 cm high, 59 cm wide and 73 cm deep. If you are building an enclosure for your carts, please make sure to measure your cart(s) first. Carts may vary in size due to changes in manufacturer and supply.

The blue cart can hold up to 60 kg of material.

Blue Cart Recycling program facts and stats

Calgary is doing a great job recycling and it's making a big difference. Through our Blue Cart program and community recycling depots, we've recycled more than 523 million kilograms in the last eight years (July 2009 - July 2017).

How much is the Blue Cart Recycling Fee?

Households with blue carts are charged monthly on their utility bill (ENMAX). The Blue Cart recycling fee is mandatory if your household is eligible. The Blue Cart program is funded using the monthly fees and revenue from the sale of recyclable materials.

Monthly rates are based on a thirty (30) day period. The billing amount is made by dividing the monthly rate by thirty (30) to come up with a daily rate, and multiplying the daily rate by the actual number of days in the billing period.

Monthly Rate 2017 2018
Blue Cart Recycling Fee ($ per 30 days) $8.30 $8.50

Other recycling options

Calgarians can also recycle at community recycling depots across the city. We also support services such as electronics recycling, tire recycling and drop-off locations for household hazardous waste.
