Put items loose in your cart. Don't put items in garbage or blue recycling bags. The only exceptions are shredded paper, which should be put in a clear plastic bag and plastic bags, which should be all bagged into one plastic bag.
If you have extra recyclables, hang on to them for next's week collection or bring them to a community recycling depot. Please don't leave items next to your cart. Learn about preparing your recyclables.
When your cart is full, set it out by 7 a.m. on your collection day. See how to place your cart.
Who receives a blue cart?
We provide blue carts to single family homes up to and including four units, as long as they are not part of a multi-unit complex, such as an apartment or condominium.
Blue cart size: The blue cart is 110 cm high, 62 cm wide and 71 cm deep. It can hold up to 60 kg of material.
Blue Cart Recycling program facts and stats
Calgary is doing a great job recycling and it's making a big difference. Through our Blue Cart program and community recycling depots, we've recycled more than 465 million kilograms in the last seven years (July 2009 - July 2016).
How much is the Blue Cart Recycling Fee?
Households with blue carts are charged monthly on their utility bill (ENMAX). The Blue Cart recycling fee is mandatory if your household is eligible. The Blue Cart program is funded using the monthly fees and revenue from the sale of recyclable materials.
Monthly rates are based on a thirty (30) day period. The billing amount is made by dividing the monthly rate by thirty (30) to come up with a daily rate, and multiplying the daily rate by the actual number of days in the billing period.
