School tours of landfills and recycling sorting facility

School Tours Landfill Materials Recycling Facility

Fun, educational, and eye-opening, let one of our educators escort your class on an unforgettable tour of a landfill or recycling sorting facility.

Through first-hand experience and activity-based programming, your class will gain an understanding and appreciation for Calgary's waste reduction and diversion efforts.

The tours will cover these exciting topics:

Landfill management

Get closer to a landfill operation and see what Calgarians throw away on an average day.

Reduce, reuse and recycle

Focusing on the three R's emphasizes reducing, before reusing and recycling.

Compost

See where leaves and pumpkins are turned back into soil at our outdoor compost pad.

Please note: The tours are full for the 2014-2015 school year. Please visit us in June 2015 to book tours for the 2015-2016 school year.

Recycling stats

  • Thanks to the efforst of Calgarians, we've recycled more than 410 million kilograms of materials in the last six years through blue carts and community recycling depots (July 2009 - July 2015).
  • Since the Blue Cart program began in Calgary and community recycling depots switched to no-sort recycling, Calgarians have increased recycling by about 70 per cent. As a result, we have saved over 20,000 garbage trucks worth of materials from being buried in the landfill.

The Blue Cart program also enjoys overwhelming support from residents:
