Tax phone scam

There has been a recent report of a telephone scam where the caller claims to be from The City of Calgary regarding outstanding taxes.

The City does contact citizens by phone and in person regarding taxes, but will NEVER:

  • Ask for payment by pre-paid credit card, gift cards or bitcoin.
  • Threaten to send the police, lay criminal charges or threaten you with arrest/jail for non-payment.
  • Request personal information such as Social Insurance Number (SIN), health care number, passport number or birthdate.
  • Use aggressive language or tone.

Have you received a suspicious call advising you owe money to The City?

Contact 311 or call 403-268-CITY (2489) to verify the call's authenticity.
