Main streets are active areas that attract Calgarians to socialize, work, shop, dine, celebrate local events and are often important transportation routes.
According to The Municipal Development Plan, there are currently 24 main streets across Calgary. Historically, many of the original main streets areas were formed along street car lines. These street car lines attracted people and the areas evolved into destinations and roadways for many forms of transportation.
The City’s Main Streets initiative will analyze the needs of neighbourhood residents, along with economic research, to identify success criteria for future growth in these areas.
The first step in this process was to gather local perspectives about main street issues, opportunities and outcomes. Check out the map below to see where the main streets are. Visit calgary.ca/mainstreets to learn about what Calgarians had to say about their main street neighbourhoods.
