Under our Community Standards Bylaw, all balconies, decks, fences, porches and stairs must be kept in “good repair.”
Good repair means a condition where something is free from:
- significant damage
- peeling surfaces
- broken, missing, or fallen parts
- rot or other significant deterioration
- openings that are not secured
- other visual evidence of a lack of general maintenance
Fines for violations of these regulations range between $100 and $300.
Regulations regarding building and structure maintenance are found in part 12 of our Community Standards Bylaw
and in the Land Use Bylaw
. For information regarding building permits and other topics, please also refer to the Land Use Bylaw.
This page is an overview of this bylaw. Please refer to the actual bylaw for more detailed information. Original copies of the bylaws are available at the City Clerk's office
