Bow to Bluff Corridor

bow to bluff

Overview

Bow to Bluff began as an independent, citizen-led initiative focused on transforming the public corridor along the Northwest LRT line between the Bow River and McHugh Bluff into a great public space. The Bow to Bluff Urban Design Framework provides a framework to guide future development throughout the Bow to Bluff corridor. It identifies a set of priority projects necessary for the corridor to be experienced as both a functional and cohesive space. It is important to note that the projects identified in the Bow to Bluff Urban Design Framework are reflective of the community’s aspirations as expressed during the public engagement process.

Purpose

In 2012, City Council directed City staff to review the Bow to Bluff Urban Design Framework and where appropriate, prepare amendments to the Hillhurst/Sunnyside Area Redevelopment Plan for Council’s consideration. The City is currently undertaking a comprehensive review of both documents to identify appropriate amendments to the Hillhurst/Sunnyside Area Redevelopment Plan in order to enable the implementation of the community’s vision.

The planning process

  • In February 2011, a group of independent citizens approached the Ward 7 Office with an idea to engage their fellow citizens in the revitalization of the public corridor along the Northwest LRT line from the Bow River to the McHugh Bluff. Subsequently, with the support of City staff, the Bow to Bluff partnership was established, with the citizen group comprising members from the Great Public Spaces group of Civic Camp and the Hillhurst-Sunnyside Community Association.
  • In May 2011, Council approved funding from the Innovation Fund in order to not only engage citizens in the reimagining of the Bow to Bluff public corridor, but also to develop a design framework from citizen input and a comprehensive process guide to support other community-driven improvements to public spaces across the city.
  • In March 2012, the Bow to Bluff Urban Design Framework and the Bow to Bluff Process Guide were finalized by the community, consultants and City staff following a high-level review of the documents.
  • In July 2012, City Council directed City staff to review the Bow to Bluff Urban Design Framework and prepare amendments to the Hillhurst/Sunnyside Area Redevelopment Plan, where appropriate.
  • In May 2017, we will be re-engaging with the community to make sure the design framework is still relevant, and to help prioritize the projects outlined in the framework.

How to get involved

We continue to take online feedback on this project through a short five minute survey. The survey will be open until June 15.

The City held an engagement event on May 27. We collected feedback on the current design framework, and on what projects are higher priorities for the community. We also provided two walking site tours, that provided information about the current state of the corridor and our vision. The Urban Design Framework and the Bow to Bluff Process Guide can be downloaded from www.bowtobluff.org. If you have questions or concerns about this project, please contact 311.
