Busking Guidelines

​Thank you for adhering to the guidelines outlined below for busking in Calgary. Please have your valid busking ID visible at all times during your performance. For more information on obtaining your busking ID, locations, payment and how to connect with us, please visit calgary.ca/busking.

Standard Busker ID Guidelines

  • Performers permitted in Calgary public areas only.
  • Maximum performance time is one hour per busking location.
  • You must be 18+ to busk independently. Those who are aged 16 or 17 need parental consent to busk unsupervised. Buskers under the age of 16 must have a responsible adult accompanying them at all times while performing.
  • No amplification can be used with the Standard Busker ID. A Busk Stop ID or Calgary Transit Busker ID is required should you wish to use amplification, and is only permitted at designated busk stops and Calgary Transit locations.
  • No high-risk or unsafe performances, which may put the public and/or the performer at risk, such as those involving knives or fire are permitted.
  • Consideration must be given for other acts performing in close proximity. 
  • Please leave one block minimum between you and any Busk Stop locations.
  • Busking in areas booked for festivals or events are subject to the event permit holder’s approval.
  • Busking performances at parks may take place only during normal park hours, while the park is open to the public.
  • No busking in areas while paid performers are working.
  • No busking where either the performer and or the audience gathered to view the performer is blocking pedestrian and or vehicular traffic.
  • All performances must be suitable for a general family audience rating.
  • Failure to display a valid Busker ID while performing, or failure to follow these guidelines, may result in busking privileges being removed.
  • You are permitted to sell recordings of your own performance, displayed in your instrument case. No other merchandise sales are permitted.
  • Busking operates on a first-come, first-served basis. Please ensure you are abiding by the one hour maximum.
  • Failure to comply with these guidelines may result in busking privileges being revoked. 

Busk Stop ID guidelines

Adherence to all Standard Busker ID guidelines in addition to the following:

  • Adherence to all Standard Busker ID Guidelines in addition to the following.
  • Buskers who do not have a valid Busk Stop ID are not permitted to perform at designated busk stops. If you arrive and a non-permitted busker is in the location, please ask them kindly to move locations. Should any concerns arise please contact the City of Calgary at 311.
  • Use of an amp is only permitted at designated busk stops.
  • Please use amplification in a responsible manner and respect the location and flow of foot traffic. If complaints are received, or if City of Calgary Bylaw Officers deem the amplification level as too loud, it could result in the removal of your busking ID and amplification privileges.
  • Please use small and portable amps that are battery powered.

Calgary Transit Busker ID guidelines

Adherence to all Standard Busker ID guidelines in addition to the following:

  • Busking at transit stops or in transit vehicles is not allowed.
  • Busking in permitted Calgary Transit Stations is only allowed with a valid Calgary Transit Busker ID.
  • Only musical busking acts are allowed in permitted Calgary Transit stations. Please see below for a list of permitted stations.
  • Upon arriving at a station, pick up the emergency phone or push the “Help” button and let us know that you are performing. You will be asked your name and permit number to verify. At the end of your session, check out with us through the same process.
  • All performances must take place inside the station, unless otherwise stated in the list of permitted Transit stations below.
  • No performances are permitted on platforms, walkways, overpasses or stairs leading up to the station.
  • Be conscious of traffic flow and do not set up anywhere where you will block pedestrians.
  • Pick a location where you can visibly see the help phone but do not set up directly in front of it.
  • Buskers may be asked to leave certain Calgary Transit Stations due to facility maintenance or other major events such as a Calgary Flames game or concert.
  • Volumes should be kept at a level to allow customers to converse at normal talking levels.
  • Please use amplification in a responsible manner and respect the location and flow of foot traffic. If complaints are received, or if City of Calgary Bylaw Officers deem the amplification level as too loud, it could result in the removal of your busking ID and amplification privileges.

Calgary Transit permitted busking locations

​Buskers with a valid Calgary Transit Busker ID may perform in the following CTrain station:

  • 69 Street Station - main level only
  • Anderson Station
  • Brentwood Station
  • Bridgeland Station
  • Canyon Meadows Station
  • Chinook Station – plaza only
  • Crowfoot Station
  • Dalhousie Station
  • Erlton Station *see restrictions below
  • Fish Creek–Lacombe Station
  • Franklin Station
  • Heritage Station
  • Marlborough Station
  • McKnight–Westwinds Station - plaza only
  • Rundle Station
  • SAIT/ACAD/Jubilee Station
  • Somerset–Bridlewood Station - plaza only
  • Southland Station
  • Sunalta Station - main level only
  • Tuscany Station
  • University Station
  • Victoria Park/Stampede Station *see restrictions below
  • Westbrook Station - main level only
  • Whitehorn Station

​*Absolutely no performances are permitted on or around Erlton and Victoria Park/Stampede Stations during the Calgary Stampede. These areas include the platform, walkways, overpasses and stairs leading up to the station. This restriction also applies on Sneak-A-Peak day.
