Calgary’s Living Lab in action

Calgary’s Living Lab offers City physical, digital and data assets (where possible) for companies and researchers to test and try ideas and products in a real-life environment.

As The City works with industry and researchers to support their needs, some exciting experiments have already launched. Read about how Calgary’s Living Lab is supporting product research and development:

  • IN-FLIGHT Data and AirMatrix Phase II

    Conducting one of the world's first urban signals mapping operations to lay the groundwork for safe, efficient drone operations.

  • Lux Modus: LiDAR testing

    Lux Modus was able to test their advanced mobile light detection and ranging technology (LiDAR) with data from C-Train traffic.

  • City space for aerial drones

    ​SAIT, Lockheed Martin, NASA, Aerium Analytics and the University of Calgary have benefited from The City’s land at Shepard Landfill to test their ideas.

  • Electric autonomous vehicles

    ​​In September 2018, the first autonomous shuttle in Western Canada arrived in Calgary, providing the public with an opportunity to experience this technology first-hand.

  • Remote water operations

    ​​Random Acronym is Calgary based technology incubator focused mainly on servicing remote water operations in the unconventional oil and gas sector.

  • Unique indoor space

    Indoor positioning system (IPS), a system used to locate objects or people inside a building using lights, radio waves, magnetic fields, acoustic signals, or other sensory information.

  • Convenient City drone space

    ​GlobalTroxler is a Calgary based company that sells, services, and rents a variety of products, including materials testing equipment, Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) products, laser scanning drones, and ground penetrating radar for pipe and cable locating.
