Affected service hours:

What's the short version?:
From Saturday, May 16 to the very early hours of Tuesday, May 19, 2025, all downtown stations along 7 Avenue, as well as Victoria Park/Stampede Station and a few surrounding stations, will be closed. Shuttle buses will replace CTrain service between affected stations, including downtown. Full CTrain service will be back up and running again before start of service on Tuesday, May 19!
The closure area is between Sunnyside and 39 Avenue stations on the Red Line , and Westbrook and Bridgeland/Memorial stations on the Blue Line (with separate shuttle service to Sunalta Station).
What to expect:
- The Red Line will be closed between Sunnyside and 39 Avenue stations
Shuttle buses will replace train service between these stations, including all downtown stations (via shuttle stops on 6 Ave S and 9 Ave S), Victoria Park/Stampede Station, and Erlton/Stampede Station.- You can transfer to the northbound (Tuscany) CTrain at Sunnyside Station, and the southbound (Somerset-Bridlewood) CTrain at 39 Avenue Station.
- The Blue Line will be closed between Sunalta and Bridgeland/Memorial stations.
There will also be shuttle buses replacing train service to all downtown stations (via shuttle stops on 6 Ave S and 9 Ave S), as well as Westbrook Station and Shaganappi Point Station.- You can transfer to the westbound (69 Street) CTrain at Westbrook Station, and the eastbound (Saddletowne) CTrain at Bridgeland/Memorial Station.
- If you’re heading eastbound towards City Centre by CTrain, consider transferring to the shuttle bus at Westbrook Station. Stay on the train though if you’re heading towards Shaganappi Point Station or Sunalta Station. Speaking of which…
- IF YOU’RE HEADING WESTBOUND TO SUNALTA STATION – you’ll need to catch a separate shuttle!
- The Sunalta shuttle also stops at Downtown West/Kerby (where you can transfer from the Red Line shuttle), and the bus stop on 6 Ave SW at 11 St SW (where you can transfer from the Blue Line shuttle).
Full CTrain service will be back up and running again by start of service Tuesday, May 19.
What's happening?:
This long weekend closure provides the opportunity to get a lot of the annual preventative maintenance work and inspections completed on this significant section of the system. Some of the projects on this weekend’s list include:
- Lighting & electrical work, standpipe inspections, and communications system maintenance
- Canopy glass replacements at City Hall/BVC, 1 Street, 3 Street, and Centre Street stations
- Work on the 5 St SW crossing
- Tree trimming, manhole inspections, +15 glass cleaning, and other maintenance projects along the 7 Ave S right-of-way (ROW)
- Full station cleaning at downtown stations and a pre-Stampede power washing at Victoria Park/Stampede Station
- Plus a number of other projects, as time allows.
Thank you for your patience during this closure!
Why are we doing all of these closures?
We know CTrain closures can have an impact on your travel, which is why we try to keep them as minimally disruptive as possible. That’s also why they’re so important - because doing preventative work and maintenance now can ensure we’re providing Calgarians with a safe, reliable, and efficient transit system.
Some work can be completed while keeping the trains on track, but there are certain projects that are just too big, or can’t share the space safely while trains are in service, and they require fully closing off sections of the line. Occasionally, a power cut is required to carry out specific work, which also means we need to close the line to train travel.
During the planning stage, we try to consolidate projects where can to minimize how often we need to close a certain section of the system, and do our best to plan around major events or times of heaviest transit use. Wherever possible, we will opt for single tracking instead, to further reduce impact to service.
What is “single tracking”?
When considering the work that needs to be done at (or between) specific stations, we’ll look into whether closing just one side of the tracks is a safe, effective, and available option. Also known as “single tracking”, this type of closure allows us to complete the important work while also keeping train traffic moving!
Trains travelling in either direction will share the same track and same side of the station/platform.
So, when this happens, keep an eye on the station’s digital displays, and an ear out for the PA announcements to make sure you’re in the right spot - and don’t forget to double check the train’s destination display before hopping on!
