Crowchild Trail Upgrades

We're fixing the Crowchild Trail bridge over the Bow River and upgrading the way people travel in the area.

Project update: February 15 - 27, 2018

Here's what you'll notice along Crowchild Trail (between Memorial Drive and Bow Trail) over the next few weeks:

  • Construction activity will pick up as the weather warms up.
  • More construction activity means more workers than normal on-site.
  • Work will be done overhead on the Bow Trail bridge and ramps.
  • Platforms will go up on the bridge; evening/weekend lane closures and detours will be set up accordingly.
  • At the end of March/beginning of April, traffic will begin being shifted to accommodate work and equipment, including cranes, on the Bow River bridge.
  • Intermittent day-time lane closures, ramp closures, and detours along Memorial Drive and Bow Trail; road signs will reflect these accordingly along with detour routes.
  • Police officers may be present on-site to assist with traffic control.
  • In April, the construction zone will expand up to 5 Avenue N.W. (you’ll see work being done along Crowchild Trail between Bow Trail, all the way up to 5 Avenue N.W.).

Things to keep in mind:

  • Nighttime construction work will be taking place weekdays between 9 p.m. - 5 a.m.
  • Occasional ramp closures along Crowchild Trail will go into effect weekdays between 9 p.m. - 5 a.m.; road signs will reflect these accordingly along with detour routes.
  • This is a construction zone! The speed limit has been reduced and is being enforced. Please slow down for your safety and for the safety of our on-site crews.
  • One to two lane closures along Crowchild Trail are in effect in each direction during weekday off-peak hours (Mon. to Fri. between 9 p.m. - 5 a.m.)
  • One lane closures along Crowchild Trail will be in effect in each direction on weekends (beginning Fridays at 9 p.m. and ending Mondays at 5 a.m.)

Important dates:

Nov. 6, 2017- Spring 2018: Bow River / Crowchild Trail Pedestrian Underpass closure

Here's what the short-term upgrades mean for Crowchild Trail, as approved in the Crowchild Trail Study.

Managing the construction zone:

While the next two years of construction will leave us with a better Crowchild Trail and the area around it, it will be disruptive. Here's what to expect, whether you travel through or live in the area:

  • Reduced speed limits between Bow Trail and 5 Avenue N.W., for the safety of citizens and crews.
  • Narrowed traffic lanes to make space for crews.
  • No lane closures during weekday peak hours (Monday to Friday between 5 a.m. – 9 p.m.)
  • One to two lane closures in each direction during weekday off-peak hours (Monday to Friday between 9 p.m. – 5 a.m.)
  • One lane closure in each direction on weekends (beginning Fridays at 9 p.m. and ending Mondays at 5 a.m.)
  • Nighttime construction work between the hours of 9 p.m. – 5 a.m.
  • The building of road and pathway detours where required, to ensure people can still access their destinations.
  • The removal of trees where necessary, replanting, and landscape replenishments as part of this project.
  • The building of noise walls in select locations (community engagement will occur prior to construction to review details including appearance and height).
  • Our commitment to keeping business accesses open throughout construction.

Other north-south and east-west route alternatives in the area

  • West of Crowchild Trail: Shaganappi Trail and Sarcee Trail
  • East of Crowchild Trail: 14 Street N.W.
  • North of the Bow River: Memorial Drive/Parkdale Boulevard, 16 Avenue N.W.
  • South of the Bow River: Bow Trail, 17 Avenue S.W., Glenmore Trail

Tree impacts

While we make every effort to avoid impacts to trees, some trees will need to be removed as part of this project.

Because these trees are found in manicured areas (not natural areas), we have developed a tree compensation plan in which we will not only replant every tree lost, but also, over time double the amount of mature trees in this area.

Tree removals began the week of November 6, 2017 and replacement trees will be planted in the most suitable locations possible throughout the course of this project.
