Landfill rates

People can bring basic sanitary waste to any of the three City of Calgary landfills at a rate of $113/tonne. There is a minimum charge of $20 per load. For more detailed rates please see the chart below.

Higher rates for paper and cardboard

Please note commercial vehicle loads of garbage containing paper and cardboard will be charged $175 per tonne. To learn more, visit our Designated Materials page.

Please note:

  • No GST is charged on landfill rates.
  • Acceptable forms of payment for these costs include cash, debit and credit cards (Visa, MasterCard and American Express).
  • Composition of waste loads is highly variable. The City of Calgary landfill staff has final say about acceptability of any material and the charges applied to each load.

Clean Fill

Charges will vary depending on site-specific clean fill requirements.

Clean fill includes dirt, clay or gravel (less than six inches in size).

Clean fill does not include sod, wood, garbage, roots, etc. The load must be free of this debris.

A soil analysis test may be required before disposal. For more information, call 311.

Industrial Waste/Hard-to-Handle Surcharge

Applied to handle low weight, large volume loads or loads requiring special handling.

Surcharge applies regardless if the refrigerant has been removed or not.

Construction and Demolition Waste

Applies to specific materials that have been separated for recycling. Accepted at all three landfills.

Asphalt Shingles: Free of tar paper, vents, etc.

Cardboard (as capacity allows): Empty and free of garbage. Cardboard must be broken down and fit inside the bin deposit slots provided.

Drywall: Gypsum wallboard that has less than 2% by weight of garbage, wood, metal and other contaminants. Wet, painted or vinyl covered wallboards are acceptable, as well as exterior grade wallboards.

Recyclable Wood: Untreated dimensional lumber, used pallets, and other wood items that are made of raw and un-processed wood.

Yard Waste

Leaves, branches, grass, stumps and general yard debris are accepted. Sod and soil are excluded. All materials must be loose, not in plastic bags.

Designated Materials

A higher rate applies to the disposal of specific materials that are readily recyclable, but are part of a mixed load.

Applies to commercial customers only. Designated materials include*:

Asphalt: Road asphalt or asphalt shingles.

Brick and Masonry Block: Structural or decorative, with or without mortar, crushed or whole.

Concrete: Whole or crushed, up to 1 m (3.5 ft), that may contain asphalt, metal reinforcement or aggregate.

Drywall: Gypsum wallboard.

Recyclable Wood: Untreated dimensional lumber, pallets and other items made of raw and unprocessed wood.

Scrap Metal: Construction, demolition and renovation related scrap metals up to 1.2 m (4 ft).

Paper and Cardboard: Newspaper, catalogues, magazines, mixed paper (including office paper), shredded paper (must be enclosed in clear plastic bag), telephone books, boxboard and corrugated cardboard.
