Election worker information for Calgary elections.

Hiring for the 2021 General Election is now complete. 

Payments to those who worked will be provided 4 to 6 weeks after Election Day.

Note: Election workers do not receive a T4 form from Elections Calgary. You must report your earnings on your tax return. Email electionsworkers@calgary.ca if you have any questions. 

Election worker eligibility


  • If you are eligible to work in Canada, you can apply to work as an election worker.
  • You do not have to be a Canadian citizen to apply.
  • A limited number of positions are available for 16 to 17 year olds. Most positions require workers to be 18 years of age or older.
  • You must be available to complete an online training course (approximately 1 hour) and attend a 2 to 4 hour daytime training session in September or October. The training time ranges depending on the role.

Job titles and descriptions

Presiding Deputy Returning Officer (PDRO)

Training: 1 hour online and 4 hours in-person. 

The PDRO is responsible for the overall conduct of the voting station and understands the requirements of each position within the voting station. The PDRO supervises all positions in the voting station, deals with candidates and scrutineers, organizes all deliveries and materials, maintains the secrecy of the vote and ensures the smooth operation of the voting station. 

Assistant Presiding Deputy Returning Officer (APDRO)

Training: 1 hour online and 4 hour in-person. 

The APDRO assists the PDRO with supervision and conduct of the voting station. The APDRO also acts as a back-up for the Ballot Clerk and Tabulator Clerk roles. 

Ballot Clerk (BC)

Training: 1 hour online and 2 hour in-person. 

The Ballot Clerk is responsible for the account and distribution of the ballots at a voting station. 

Tabulator Clerk (TC)

Training: 1 hour online and 2 hour in-person. 

The Tabulator Clerk is responsible for the operation of the tabulator at the voting station. 

Deputy Returning Officer (DRO)

Training: 1 hour online and 2 hour in-person. 

The Deputy Returning Officer is responsible for helping the voters complete their voter statement, checking ID and issuing ballots

Information Officer (IO)

Training: 1 hour online and 2 hour in-person. 

The Information Officer is responsible for greeting voters, notifying the PDRO/APDRO if a voter requires assistance, managing lines and answering questions. 

Stand-by Worker

Training: 3 hour online and self-directed. 

A Stand-by Worker is a position that you may be called upon to take on should there be a last-minute cancellation by another Election Worker. If you agree to be a stand-by worker, you must be ready to arrive at the assigned location on short notice.

Mobile and unique voting stations

Training: 1 hour of additional paid webinar training will be provided for these voting stations.

  • Mobile voting stations are setup at care facilities and shelters throughout the city to give voters with limited mobility currently staying at these institutions an opportunity to vote.
  • Unique voting stations are setup at other institutions throughout the city to enable voters who might otherwise not be able to vote, the opportunity to cast their ballot. 
  • Outside Calgary voting stations are setup to enable eligible voters to vote for Calgary Catholic School District (CCSD) trustees. These stations will be setup within voting stations operated by other nearby municipalities.

**ELIGIBLE EXPENSES: Some positions are eligible for additional compensation in the form of expenses such as use of a personal cell phone, parking, mileage, and pre-event duties)

Responsibilities

Election workers help administer the voting and counting process under the direction of the Presiding Deputy Returning Officer (PDRO) and the Assistant PDRO. Some of the duties that an election worker might be required to perform include:

  • Setting up the voting station
  • Helping voters through the voting process
  • Counting ballots
  • ​Providing information to the public
  • Taking down the voting station

Preparation for the day

Election Workers cannot leave the voting station for any reason, so please bring plenty of food and beverages to last you the entire shift.

To bring:

  • Water/beverages - enough to last you the entire shift
  • Food/snacks - enough to last the entire shift (there may not be any kitchen facilities at your voting station)
  • Clothing – dress in layers, and ensure you are comfortable
  • Footwear – wear comfortable footwear

COVID-19 precautions

Depending on current health guidelines and requirements of The City and the facilities used for training and voting, COVID-19 precautions may be required. 

Masks are required of all election workers.

Vaccinations are strongly recommended. Alberta COVID-19 vaccine program

Information will be made available to all election workers in advance of training and voting days regarding health guidelines.
