Resilience, Livability and Sustainability

Three core values — Resilience, Livability and Sustainability — guide our decisions and drive positive outcomes for communities, the environment and the economy. Together, they ensure that our actions and investments toward three long-term goals are building a better future for our city and Calgarians.

Resilience

Calgary is building a future‑ready city that protects communities, infrastructure and the natural environment. Climate‑ready design and nature‑based solutions reduce risks from flooding, extreme heat, and severe storms, keeping long-term costs manageable and ensuring the city can adapt and recover. These efforts help neighbourhoods adapt, keep Calgarians safe, support lasting infrastructure and long-term economic growth.

We’re building a climate-ready city by empowering communities with the knowledge and resources, to respond and recover to climate hazards through programs like the Climate Ready Home Guide. Action outlined in Calgary’s Climate Strategy help residents respond to and recover from climate hazards and protect and restore natural systems that buffer climate impacts. The City is working to help prepare and make our infrastructure and services more reliable for future conditions through Climate Risk Assessment Framework.

Livability

Protecting nature and improving access to services improves quality of life for all Calgarians. Cleaner air and water, access to green spaces, and nearby facilities and amenities help create healthy, inclusive and connected communities. Reliable options for all modes of transportation, and more housing options support affordability and reduce everyday household costs.

We’re accelerating the transition to clean energy and improving energy efficiency in buildings and homes through programs like the Clean Energy Improvement Program and the Home Upgrades Program (HUP) helping reduce household costs and improve comfort. By expanding low-carbon mobility options and protecting and restoring green spaces and natural systems, we’re improving air quality, supporting physical and mental health well-being, and creating vibrant walkable neighbourhoods. Our actions are also focused on growing a green economy that increase economic opportunity for everyone.

Sustainability

A healthy environment is the foundation of Calgary’s long-term prosperity. Protecting clean air, water, land and natural and cultural heritage, supports better health through access to nature and recreation. These efforts also support a stronger economy through opportunities in nature-based solutions, renewable energy and other innovative industries. As Calgary grows and neighbourhoods evolve, sustainability helps keep communities livable, connected and ready for the future.

We’re focused on actions in Calgary’s Environment Strategy and CONNECT: Calgary’s Parks Plan, that restore ecosystems and biodiversity to maintain Calgary’s healthy natural systems, while conserving and protecting natural resources from adverse environmental impacts and conserving cultural heritage to strengthen connection to place.
