Commercial robbery

Robbery is theft with a violent component and can vary a great degree. Robberies can include a demand for an item with a verbal or implied threat of harm and possibly physical force and weapons. In most instances, the occurrence is dynamic and occurs quickly.

Reporting robberies and suspicious activity

In most situations the incident should be reported as soon as safely possible. If an offender is in a store, do not place yourself in jeopardy to call police.
If the crime is in progress, has just occurred, or is an emergency, call 9-1-1.

Defending yourself in a robbery

Section 27 of the Criminal Code reads that everyone is "justified in using as much force as is reasonably necessary" to prevent the commission of an offence. However, when force is used against another person, even self-defence, your actions will be scrutinized to ensure your actions were justified. Sections 26, 34 – 37 and 41 of the Criminal Code outline the defence of self-defence.

According to section 84 of the Criminal Code, many weapons are prohibited. This includes any device designed to be used for the purpose of injuring, immobilizing or otherwise incapacitating a person including:

• tear gas
• mace or any other gas
• any liquid, spray, powder or other substance that is capable of injuring, immobilizing or incapacitation any person.
