Air Guns & Public Safety

Air guns, including airsoft, pellet and BB guns, are widely available and are often designed to look like real firearms. Their realistic appearance makes these weapons nearly impossible for bystanders, witnesses and police officers to distinguish air guns from real firearms, especially in highly dynamic and evolving incidents.

Incidents involving air guns can escalate quickly and will result in a serious emergency response from police officers, who must treat every potential threat to public safety as real.

Youth & air guns

A significant portion of incidents involving air guns often involve youth, who are often unaware of the risks and consequences of using air guns in public spaces. What might seem like a prank or harmless fun can quickly escalate into a dangerous situation – potentially resulting in criminal charges.

Parents and guardians play a critical role in helping youth understand the legal and safety implications of using air guns in public spaces.

Real consequences

Although these weapons are unregulated and can be freely purchased, discharging an air gun within city limits is illegal. Additionally, the use of these weapons to threaten, intimidate or harm someone can result in Criminal Code charges.
