Subscribe to our newsletterIt has been a milestone year at Scotia Place, Calgary’s new multi-purpose sports, entertainment and event hub. Construction progressed from 35 feet below ground to visible above-grade structures, bringing this future downtown destination to life.
With foundational work well underway and key structural pieces installed, crews made significant strides across the site.
Highlights from this year include:
Foundation work to date includes installation of 1,100+ structural piles, pouring of 35-foot underground walls and placement of columns, stairwells and elevator cores.
Installation of essential utility infrastructure, including connection to Calgary’s District Heating System, with ongoing underground mechanical, electrical and plumbing work.
Structural steel installation began in October, marking the start of above-ground construction.
Community spaces taking shape, including the 1,000-seat community arena, indoor and outdoor public plazas, restaurants, retail spaces and accessible year-round gathering areas.
"Scotia Place is taking shape right before our eyes. Every milestone brings us closer to creating a space that will welcome Calgarians to enjoy world-class events, community gatherings and year-round experiences in the heart of downtown,” says Bob Hunter, Scotia Place project team
member.
As construction accelerates in 2026, the building will continue to rise and interior spaces will emerge.
Major activities planned for next year include:
Completing the building’s steel structure and beginning the enclosure of the building.
Continuing work on the community arena and the main event spectator space.
Starting interior construction on three restaurants, the food hall, café and public gathering areas.
Advancing streetscape and public-realm improvements surrounding the site.
