Scotia Place

6 Street S.E. underpass

Scotia Place - 6 Street S.E. Underpass

Mobility. Connection. Community.

A vital infrastructure project enhancing access to Scotia Place and surrounding developments.

Project overview

The 6 Street S.E. underpass, funded in partnership with The Government of Alberta, will improve access across the Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) Rail and support the growth of The Culture + Entertainment District. Once complete, the underpass will enhance accessibility, support a vibrant, walkable community, and help make Scotia Place and its surroundings a landmark destination for decades to come.

Benefits to Calgarians

The underpass will provide a new connection under CPKC rail, running north-south between 9 Avenue S.E and 11 Avenue S.E. at 6 Street S.E. It will feature two lanes in each direction along with well-lit pathways for pedestrians and active mode connections.

The new underpass will improve access and movement to The Culture + Entertainment District, creating a more connected and enjoyable experience for those who live, work and visit the area. The clear-span bridge design and enhanced lighting will improve sightlines and foster a greater sense of safety, security, and comfort throughout the area.

Construction timeline

As of early January, crews have been on site relocating and upgrading utilities along 9 Avenue S.E. between 5 Street S.E. and 6 Street S.E. as part of ongoing work for the 6 Street S.E. Underpass.

Starting the week of Feb. 9, 2026, additional traffic and pedestrian changes will be in place to support this next phase of construction, including the removal of 13 trees and the Sentinel markers at the corner of 9 Avenue and 6 Street S.E. These impacts include:

  • No access to 6 Street S.E. from 9 Avenue S.E.
  • No left turns into or out of The Confluence Historic Site & Parkland west entrance (east entrance remains open)
  • Sidewalk closures along 9 Avenue S.E., rerouting pedestrians, cyclists and wheelchair users to the RiverWalk pathway

Please watch for signage and temporary changes to traffic and pedestrian patterns throughout the area.
