Subscribe to our newsletterIt’s been an exciting and busy fall at the Scotia Place construction site! In early October, crews put up the first steel beams on the south side of the building, marking the start of going vertical. For Calgarians, this means the vision of Scotia Place is starting to rise up as a landmark destination in Calgary’s vibrant Culture + Entertainment District
Steel forms the backbone of Scotia Place. It provides the strength and flexibility needed to support large-scale concerts and major events. Its design shapes the arena and provides the roof strength needed for world-class entertainment.
Placing the first beam sets the stage for the rest of the structure. Every beam must be placed just right to ensure the arena stands strong when the lights go up, or the teams hit the ice.
Most of the steel for the project was fabricated in Ontario, and some in Alberta, supporting Canadian industries. The project will use about 9,000 metric tonnes of structural steel which will make a big mark in Calgary’s skyline.
While steel goes up, crews are also busy on the ground. In September, they:
Poured concrete for the mezzanine level and main concourse
Poured concrete for the floor of the public plaza
Worked on the foundation at the northeast corner and southwest entrance
Installed underground pipes and systems in the loading dock
Steel work will continue through winter, with roof work starting in 2026. Soon, crews will add the concrete stands from Blackfalds, Alberta in the lower bowl. This will bring fans closer to concerts, games, and unforgettable events. Each milestone brings us closer to making Scotia Place a great placed for people to gather in downtown Calgary in 2027.
