Scotia Place marks major construction milestone

Construction at Scotia Place reached a major milestone in September with the installation of the final structural steel beam in the main arena. The achievement was celebrated with a Topping Off ceremony, a long-standing construction tradition that recognizes the completion of a building's structural steel frame.

To date, crews have installed approximately 7,760 metric tonnes (over 17 million pounds) of structural steel in the main arena helping shape what will become the heart of sports and entertainment in Calgary. With the structural steel frame now complete in the main arena, Scotia Place continues to move closer to welcoming concerts, sporting events, community gatherings and celebrations beginning in fall 2027.

Construction also continued to advance across the site in August. Highlights featured in this month's timelapse video include:

  • The east side of the roof is now enclosed and crews are now working to close in the centre portion of the main arena

  • Progress on both the north outdoor public plaza and indoor public plaza, including the installation of tree wells

  • Precast stadia installation surpassing the halfway point in the main bowl, with work continuing in the lower bowl and the ESSO Community Arena

  • Steel installation beginning for the reassembly of the historic Stephenson Building

6 Street S.E. Underpass construction moves forward 

Work continues to progress on the new 6 Street S.E. Underpass. Throughout August, crews completed concrete work for the lower section of the underpass and removed the temporary forms that support the concrete while it cured. Crews also applied waterproofing to exterior walls and started to backfill behind the abutments.

Progress was also made on underground drainage infrastructure, including installing a new stormwater connection that will support the future lift station. In the coming weeks, crews will work on the installation of street lights and traffic signals at the intersection of 11 Avenue S.E. and 12 Avenue S.E.

Together, their spiritual and practical relationships to the land create rich lessons for our life as a community.
