Eau Claire Market and River Run Condos demolitions
Eau Claire Market in Spring 2024.
The City of Calgary took possession of Eau Claire Market and the River Run Condos on June 1, 2024. The buildings were immediately secured as procurement began for a contractor to complete the demolition work.
The City is now moving forward with the demolition of these properties. Work began on January 20, and is expected to be complete by June 1, 2025.
The scope of work includes the demolition and removal of all above-ground structures, the below-grade parking structures, the building foundations and all vegetation and hardscaping within the project lands.
Work began with interior abatement, followed by exterior structural demolition on January 22. The River Run Condo site is expected to be complete and backfilled by mid-March, with completion at the Eau Claire Market by June 1, 2025.
Why are the demolitions proceeding if the land may not be required for a Green Line station?
Vacant properties can become unsafe spaces in community. The removal of these buildings will decrease the potential for safety and security issues, while fulfilling contractual obligations.
The Council-approved 46-km vision of Green Line has not changed. This includes an elevated crossing of the Bow River with a station at 2 Avenue. The future needs of the project may include the lands which The City has already acquired.
Are there any interim uses that are planned on these lands until re-development takes place?
The City is investing in Eau Claire, Chinatown and the East Village to enhance areas where Calgarians can proudly participate in a desirable, active and lively cultural destination. Interim use opportunities will be explored and delivered with local community and business groups.
