Maintenance and storage facility
Rendering of the maintenance and storage facility at the future Shepard Station. On July 30, 2024, Calgary City Council approved the recommendation to begin Phase 1 construction which included building the maintenance and storage facility at Highfield Station. Click here for more information.
A new maintenance and storage facility will be built for the Green Line near Highfield Station. It will be one of the first structures built for Green Line, and is needed to house the new fleet of light rail vehicles (LRVs) that will begin to arrive in late 2027.
The facility will be constructed to support the initial fleet of 28 vehicles and can be expanded to support more as Green Line grows.
What is a maintenance and storage facility?
When trains are not in service, they go to the facility to be stored, cleaned, maintained and serviced. Calgary Transit has two maintenance and storage facilities for its existing Light Rail Transit system: Anderson Garage and the Oliver Bowen Maintenance Facility.
Green Line requires its own facility because:
- The existing facilities are at full capacity.
- Green Line uses low floor trains, while the Red and Blue lines have high floor trains.
- Green Line does not physically connect to the existing Red and Blue lines.
What is included at the facility?
- Vehicle maintenance shop with three levels so repairs and maintenance can be conducted above and below the trains
- Train wash for cleaning train exteriors
- Service lanes for cleaning train interiors
- A body shop for repairing exterior damage to panels and glass, and interior repairs such as bench replacements
- Component repair shops
- Parts storage
- Administrative office area
