Green Line LRT Downtown Segment Update
On June 9, 2026, the project team shared an update on the functional plan for the Downtown Segment of Green Line at Executive Committee. The update focused on the findings from our outreach, engagement and research program. They were designed to help us understand the complete picture of what Calgarians think overall and what matters most to those who are most engaged or affected.
Engagement (through an online survey and in-person drop-in sessions) provided us with detailed, localized and experience-based feedback. Participants highlighted specific concerns about impacts, alignment or implementation. More details about engagement can be found in our What We Heard Report. When it comes to public sentiment heard during engagement, opposition to the proposed elevated route was commonly heard from participants.
Research showed us overall levels of awareness and support across a representative sample of Calgarians. Our survey shows that 65% of Calgarians indicated they have some level of support for the proposed elevated Green Line route through downtown. They cited the importance of Green Line as a city-building investment and becoming a key part of Calgary's transit network as their reasons for supporting it. You will find additional research findings in Attachment 5 of report presented to Executive Committee.
As part of the outreach program, we met with 44 interest holders along the proposed route. When asked about their support for the project, 83% of them gave a negative score. More details about our outreach program and what we heard from these interest holders can be found in the What We Heard Report linked above.
After hearing this update and the varying levels of support, the Committee proposed and approved a modified direction for the project. Throughout the summer we will identify potential alternative alignment options for the Downtown Segment. The options will be shared with the Executive Committee in September 2026.
Background Information
With construction underway on the SE Segment, from Shepard to the Event Centre/Grand Central Station, work is concurrently moving forward on the Functional Plan for the Downtown Segment.
The Functional Plan will examine an elevated alignment between the Event Centre/Grand Central Station, along 10 Avenue S. in the Beltline and 2 Street S.W. downtown. This work will build on the concept developed by the Province of Alberta and includes validating the design and costs for an elevated route.
The topics being studied include:
- station concepts and locations,
- how people will get on and off the trains at stations,
- if and how adjacent buildings and amenities may connect,
- designs for the guideway that the trains will travel along, and,
- options for how public spaces under the guideway might be used.
Where possible, feedback received during engagement will be used to advance the design and recommendations for the Downtown Segment.
