Local business feature - Hemlock Tattoo Studio
Hemlock Tattoo is a female-owned and operated tattoo studio started with the intention of creating a safe and inclusive space for all within the world of body art. The studio is made up of four artists, all of which left a studio they had worked at together previously to create their dream tattoo shop from the ground up.
Located in the heart of Victoria Park, Hemlock Tattoo is making waves in Calgary’s tattoo scene with their progressive policies and harm reductionist training. Each specializing in different kinds of tattooing, all four of the studio’s artists bring something unique to their shared storefront.
With over 10 years of tattooing experience, Taylor Hudson (she/her) is the studio’s resident neotraditional “colour queen”. Janeen Scott (she/her) specializes in “engraving style” tattoos with lots of detail and shading, especially those that play into Catholicism and magic. Having a background in digital design, Geneva Haley (she/they) is a skilled illustrator and often creates tattoos inspired by her childhood spent in the countryside. While Marlee Watts (she/they) serves as the shop’s general manager, she has also been apprenticing at the shop for roughly a year and has a strong affinity for bold blackwork with high contrast and a nostalgic feel.
Only a short walk away from the Green Line’s current utility casting installation and deep utility construction work along 12th Avenue between Olympic Way S.E. and 6 Street S.E., accessibility challenges were expected in the areas surrounding Hemlock Tattoo. While minor, it is still crucial that we inform businesses of these challenges in advance through our business registration program, a program that Hemlock Tattoo has been subscribed to and utilizing for quite some time.
By providing businesses like Hemlock Tattoo with regular updates on construction work and accessibility changes through the Green Line’s business registration program, we hope to ensure that these businesses can plan for and adapt to these changes accordingly, something that the residents at Hemlock Tattoo have expressed great gratitude for.
