Construction Begins on Calgary’s Green Line LRT SE Project

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Calgary, AB – Today, after more than a decade of planning, the City of Calgary was joined by the Honourable Chrystia Freeland, Minister of Transport and Internal Trade, Government of Canada, the Honourable Danielle Smith, Premier of Alberta and Minister of Transportation and Economic Corridors, the Honourable Devin Dreeshen, Government of Alberta, and Mayor of Calgary, Jyoti Gondek to celebrate a major milestone for public transit in Calgary with the official groundbreaking for the SE Segment and kick-off for Phase 1 of the Green Line Light Rail Transit (LRT).

The Green Line LRT is Calgary’s largest-ever infrastructure investment, with $6.248 billion in funding from The City of Calgary, Government of Alberta, and Government of Canada, and reflects years of community vision, hard work, and collaboration. This project is more than a transit line—it’s a commitment to building Calgary’s best future and a more connected, accessible, and prosperous city for all Calgarians.

“Today’s groundbreaking is truly a significant milestone for the Green Line LRT project and a testament to the power of collaboration in catalyzing major transit projects. This is a tangible step towards making public transit a more accessible, reliable, efficient, and desirable option for Calgarians. We will continue working with our partners to make life easier and more convenient for Calgarians and to make Calgary and Alberta’s economy stronger,” stated the Honourable Chrystia Freeland, Minister of Transport and Internal Trade.

“After years of hard work and planning, today marks a major step forward for smart infrastructure in Calgary. The Green Line is a long-term investment in the city’s future. One that will create jobs, support growth, and ensure Calgarians stay connected as the city continues to thrive. Our government is pleased to support this next chapter in Calgary’s story,” stated Premier Danielle Smith.

“The Green Line is about building a faster, smarter Calgary. We’re investing in a transit system that connects people to jobs, cuts commute times, and keeps the city moving for decades to come” stated Devin Dreeshen, Minister of Transportation and Economic Corridors.

"The Green Line LRT is a generational investment that will create thousands of jobs, unlock new opportunities for housing and development, and shape Calgary’s growth for decades. This is how we build a resilient economy and a city that works for everyone. Calgarians have waited a long time for this moment, and today we deliver on our commitment," stated Mayor Gondek.

The SE Segment, from Shepard in the southeast to the Event Centre/Grand Central Station in the Beltline, will build the first 16 kilometres of an overall 46-kilometre vision, before connecting with the future Downtown Segment and into the existing Red and Blue LRT Lines. Including the Downtown Segment, Phase 1 will build, 17.2 kilometres of twin-track LRT infrastructure, 12 new stations, a maintenance and storage facility, three Park and Ride lots, and 28 new modern low-floor light rail vehicles.

By building the foundation to facilitate future extensions further south and north, the Green Line will unlock much needed opportunities for housing and development and connect Calgary’s growing population with a fast, frequent, and reliable, high quality transit system.
