Level Up Calgary Season 2

Level Up Calgary is back in 2023 to work with students on reimagining public spaces in Calgary. In partnership with the Calgary Board of Education (CBE) and Microsoft Canada, the City of Calgary launched Level up Calgary, a student-driven civic engagement program that makes use of Minecraft Education edition.

Students can choose from four Minecraft construction challenges this season, including building an underground Green Line LRT Station in Eau Claire. “We are thrilled to have Green Line on board for level up Calgary season two achievement unlocked,” shared Chris Blais, CBE’s Teaching and Learning with Technology Specialist.

Level Up Calgary is a modern learning opportunity that allows students to engage in work that meets the curriculum while interacting with real-world experts. Students that select to build the underground Green Line station in Minecraft will have the opportunity to tunnel underground, challenging them to find the most accessible way to bring all Calgarians down to the station.

“It shows our students the importance of equity, mobility and accessibility, so our students will have to consider those things when working,” added Blais.

With eight weeks to complete the build, students from all grade levels of the Calgary Board of Education, Calgary Catholic School Division and Rocky View Schools are encouraged to participate. However, in the spirit of equity, this world is available globally. Students are creating a persuasive argument for their build, and they have to convince the judging panel why they should select their submission over any other.

“This is their future, this is their voice, and they have the ability to share their ideas,” said Blais.
