Meet the Calgarians Building the Green Line – Ana Marcal

Meet Ana Marcal, a professional biologist currently serving as a Biologist and Lead Environmental Monitor for the Green Line LRT SE Project. Over the last eight years of her career, Ana has developed two principal areas of expertise: wildlife biology and construction environmental management.

Ana has been with the Green Line project since April 2024. Her role has intensified in 2025 as pre-construction Projects to support the Green Line’s ultimate construction in SE Calgary have moved forward. During this pre-construction phase she has been working on bird deterrence planning and installation/maintenance and wildlife monitoring along the LRT alignment.

Preventing birds from nesting on a construction site is critical to avoid potentially costly schedule delays and to commit to building responsibly. Over 450 bird species are protected under Canada’s Migratory Birds Convention Act (MBCA). This means if a bird were to nest on a Green Line site, no work could proceed around the nest until the hatchlings have fledged, meaning they are able to fly away from their nest on their own. This process can take over a month depending on the species.

Since the project broke ground in June, Ana’s responsibilities have shifted towards onsite monitoring and inspections to ensure the project’s compliance with Federal, Provincial, Municipal acts, regulations, guidelines, and bylaws. As many construction sites become active, Ana monitors for birds and wildlife in each area.
