Meet the People Building the Green Line – Chris Otto
Meet Chris Otto, a systems integration specialist with WSP, the design partner for the Green Line LRT. Chris has been on the project for three years, working on the signalling and train control systems.
“It’s a safety critical system—there’s a lot of due diligence involved in the design work. That gives me a strong sense of personal responsibility, ensuring that I do my job correctly when I come to work every day,” says Chris.
The signalling and train control systems for Calgary’s CTrain often go unnoticed because they operate in the background, yet they are critical components of light rail transit and ensure that trains can move safely and efficiently throughout the city.
“These systems control how the trains move, while ensuring that the speed at which they move is both safe and comfortable,” says Chris.
Flashing lights, gate arms, and traffic lights are all part of the signalling and train control systems. Train operators are also given live information about the locations of trains in their vicinity so they can adjust their speed accordingly.
“In the end, when the Green Line is built, this will contribute to Calgarians’ confidence that they have a dependable way of travelling through the southeast corridor in Calgary,” says Chris.
