Protecting Calgary’s wildlife while building the future (Behind the Scenes)

Construction on the Green Line LRT is becoming more visible across southeast Calgary, but what you see is only part of the story. Before work begins, extensive assessments are carried out to ensure the project is delivered responsibly and sustainably.

In our latest episode of Green Line LRT – Behind the Scenes, we feature the work led by Alannah Gallo, a wildlife biologist with WSP Canada, one of our key partners. Alannah explains the critical role of wildlife and non-acoustic amphibian surveys in protecting local ecosystems.

Wildlife surveys target terrestrial wildlife species (e.g., mammals, birds, and reptiles), and the non-acoustic surveys target amphibians that can’t be detected by their calls (e.g., western tiger salamander and northern leopard frog). Through these surveys, Alannah identifies, and records wildlife and habitat features on site and recommends ways to minimize impacts. This might mean protecting the area around a specific feature (like a bird nest) using a buffer zone or relocating species when necessary.

All surveys follow Alberta’s Sensitive Species Inventory Guidelines, which provide standardized methods for collecting reliable data on species protected under Alberta’s Wildlife Act and the Federal Species at Risk Act.
