March 2021 Green Line LRT Project Update

Upcoming engagement opportunities for North Central Mobility & BRT Studies

Help shape the future of mobility and BRT services in north central Calgary! The City is conducting the North Central BRT and Mobility Studies to identify improvements to the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) service along Centre Street and Harvest Hills Boulevard to understand the influence of these changes and the addition of Green Line LRT on the transportation network in north central Calgary. These two project areas are part of the functional planning process for segment 2 of the Green Line LRT project.

Here’s how you can get involved

1. Join City of Calgary staff at a virtual open house to learn more about the North Central BRT Study & Mobility Studies and provide feedback to the project teams:

These are identical drop in events with no formal schedule, participants may join at any time during the open house.

2. Provide your feedback online from March 15-25, 2021 by visiting
          engage.calgary.ca/greenline or call 311.

Information collected during this phase of engagement will be used to inform final recommendations for mobility and BRT improvements being presented to Council in April 2021.

For accessibility assistance with engagement participation, please call 311. For TTY services: 403-268-4TTY

Project details – what we heard

In January 2021, we conducted the second phase of online engagement on the North Central Mobility and BRT Studies, which included virtual drop-in open house events and an opportunity to provide online feedback. A summary of what we heard from phase two will be available online during the final phase of engagement.

Project overview

Here’s an overview of the two project areas, what we heard from you during the first two phases of engagement and what’s coming up next.

North Central Mobility Study

A mobility study reviews the safety, connectivity and efficiency of the transportation network. With the addition of the Green Line LRT and North Central BRT, Calgarians are going to move differently throughout Calgary. This study is being conducted to understand how travel patterns may change as a result of future Green Line operations and BRT services.

We used your input from the first two phases of engagement to refine our ideas on mobility improvements to support Green Line LRT and improved BRT services. For the final phase of engagement, we want your input on our list of recommendations to improve transportation services that will shape the future of mobility in north central Calgary. These mobility enhancements are for all transportation users, so we are interested in hearing from you whether you walk, wheel, take transit or drive.

North Central BRT Study

As Green Line leaves downtown and crosses the Bow River to 16 Avenue N. in the first stage of construction, we know that communities to the north must connect to the transit network and that bus service will need to adapt to the new LRT line. The study will consider improvements from downtown along the existing Centre Street N. and Harvest Hills Boulevard route to 160 Avenue N.

We have used the feedback from the first two phases of engagement to help develop recommendations to the BRT corridor, route and stations. We want your feedback on these recommendations and the criteria we use to prioritize them into short-, medium- and long-term investments. These recommendations will be the first step to improve how transit functions in north central Calgary as we plan for the future transition to Green Line LRT.
