Safety and accessibility

Making sure Green Line stations are safe and accessible is not only a requirement, it's a priority.

The examples of ground-level and underground stations below highlight the safety and accessibility features you can expect at Green Line stations.

Safety and security features

1. Signage and wayfinding to help customers navigate the station and transit system.

2. Intertrack barrier prevents crossing the tracks at any place other than a pedestrian crossing.

3. Passenger shelters are glass so there is always a visible sight-line into the shelter. Shelters have heaters that are activated in cold temperatures.

4. Canopies provide shelter from wind, rain and snow.
CCTV cameras throughout the stations are monitored live by staff in the Transit Control Centre.
Public Address (PA) system broadcasts announcements to passengers.

5. Help phones on platforms and other locations as needed. When the phones are activated, a video feed from that location is displayed on the Transit Control Centre monitors.

6. LED lights to keep the station brightly lit.

7. Between-car barriers to mitigate the gap hazard between trains.

12. Driver on board
at all times.

Accessibility features

8. Platform edge tactile strip warns visually impaired customers of the platform edge.

9. Passenger circulation zone ensures generous space between the platform edge and any obstructions. This gives passengers space to load/unload and provides room for wheelchair access.

10. Platform is level with train with a minimized gap for accessibility, and to mitigate gap hazards.

11. Passenger Information Displays show real-time information, updates and notices.

12. Low-floor LRVs allow for lower station platforms, improving accessibility and making it easier to access platforms.

2. Between-car barriers to mitigate the gap hazard between trains.

3. Help phones on platforms, at station entrances and in elevators. When the phones are activated, a video feed of that location is displayed on the Transit Control Centre monitors.

4. Open platform design for clear visibility and line of sight.

5. Operator on board at all times.

6. Pictogram exit signs show passengers where to exit.

7. LED lights and light-coloured walls and ceilings to keep the station brightly lit.

Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED)

CPTED is a set of design principles that Green Line uses to create safer spaces through well-planned environmental design. Some examples of CPTED features include:

  • Glass passenger shelters so there is always a line-of-sight into the shelter
  • Brightly lit stations with no dark corners or spaces
  • Underground stations have an open platform design (limited or no columns) for clear visibility across the station
  • Landscaping, trees and shrubs that are carefully planned to prevent hiding spaces or sight-line obstructions.

Safety when Green Line is operating

Green Line is responsible for designing and building a safe transit system. Once the Green Line is operational, the safety and security of passengers will be provided by Calgary Transit

Accessible design

Green Line’s accessible design features will meet or exceed The City’s Access Design Standards and the National Building Code: Alberta Edition. This is typical of all new buildings and infrastructure constructed on City-owned land.

Accessible design work is done in collaboration with:

Accessible design for Calgary Transit’s system is continually evolving and improving with input from the groups above. Public input is taken through the ACA to ensure a consistent approach across City infrastructure.
