Yard waste - Tree branches

How to compost branches

Put tree branches, hedge prunings and tree trunks in your green cart.

Size restrictions

Pieces must be less than:

  • 15 cm (six inches) in diameter for branches and tree trunks
  • 1.25 m (four feet) in length

Make sure the lid of the cart can close.

Special Instructions

Always fill your green cart first.

If it’s full, put extra cut branches in paper yard bags, roll the tops of the bags closed and set at least 0.5 m (2 ft) to the side of your green cart for collection.

Do not lean the bundles on the cart or place them on the cart lid.

During the busy yard season, we will collect material inside green carts, but may limit the number of extra paper bags we pick up to make sure everyone gets service.

If your tree is diseased, please contact 311 to speak with Waste & Recycling Services staff so that we can discuss the appropriate disposal options with you.
