A free public art exhibition at Devonian Gardens: September 16 – December 17 Fragment to Form | Katie Ohe and the Shape of Persistence

We are proud to present Fragment to Form | Katie Ohe and the Shape of Persistence, a special exhibition celebrating one of Canada’s most influential sculptors. Katie Ohe has shaped Alberta’s artistic identity for more than six decades through her pioneering abstract sculpture and mentorship of multiple generations of artists.

At the heart of this exhibition is one of Ohe’s earliest large-scale works, Day and Night. Installed in Prince’s Island Park for nearly 50 years, the sculpture endured Calgary’s intense seasons before recently undergoing careful conservation and finding a new home indoors at Devonian Gardens.

For the first time, all of Ohe’s works from Calgary’s public art collection are gathered together alongside select pieces from her private collection — celebrating her enduring legacy of form, material, and creative persistence.

The Conservation of Day and Night

After more than five decades outdoors, Katie Ohe’s terrazzo fountain Day and Night has been carefully conserved and relocated indoors. The sculpture’s delicate surface, shaped by years of Calgary’s freeze–thaw cycles, required meticulous restoration.

Working closely with Ohe, The City’s conservator and conservation team dismantled, cleaned, and repaired the work, renewing its original green and grey terrazzo finish. Guided by Ohe’s insights, every step honoured the artist’s original vision and craftsmanship.

Now restored and secure in its new setting, Day and Night continues to embody Ohe’s quiet persistence and dedication to form, material, and movement through time.
