April 2026 Newsletter
Over the past month, I have been engaged across the community and at City Hall. On March 9th 2026, I attended the Bowness Community Association to officially open the Community Resource Centre. This centre will provide residents experiencing disruptions due to the Bearspaw South Feeder Main (BSFM) construction with in-person access to city employees who can answer questions and provide support. In addition, I spoke on a panel at the She Governs event hosted by Equal Voice at City Hall. I want to extend gratitude to the organizers of She Governs and their work in teaching participants about Calgary’s municipal government through a model council meeting about local issues. I also had the pleasure of attending Cowboy’s 8th Annual Wing-Off to raise money for Kids Sport and help underprivileged kids get involved in organized sports. It has also been great to see the work being done in Calgary to attract economic activity and support the arts during tours at the Glenbow Museum at the JR Shaw Centre for the Arts and Culture, the Werklund Centre, and the Calgary Telus Convention Centre.
At City Hall, the Public Hearing on blanket rezoning began on March 23rd and wrapped up on April 7. On April 8, Council officially voted to repeal blanket rezoning, putting an end to this disastrous policy and the damage it has inflicted on our communities by ignoring residents, pitting neighbours against each other, and ruining the character of our communities. Calgarians were very clear in the last election and during the multiple day’s long public hearing. They wanted blanket rezoning repealed. I ran on the promise that I would listen to Calgarians and vote to repeal blanket rezoning and that’s exactly what I did. Now that we have repealed blanket rezoning, I am focused on implementing a better, community-first process that prioritizes the voices of residents in decision-making. Thank you to everyone who made a submission at the public hearing. I heard many good suggestions that will allow Calgary to have clear, community-focused development. I am eager and committed to working with my colleagues to get this right for Calgarians.
The BSFM reinforcement project, which began on March 9, was successfully completed at the beginning of April. Crews worked day and night in the rain and snow to complete this important project and deserve our sincerest gratitude. As well, thank you to everyone for doing your part to conserve water over the three and a half week long repairs. This important work could not have been completed without your help! Repairs included reinforcing nine high-risk segments, concrete backfilling and paving to restore work areas, replacing valves that were not fully operational, and carefully refilling and returning the pipe to service. Despite these reinforcements, the pipe remains in poor condition and remains at risk. Work on the replacement pipe is underway, with completion expected in December 2026. Future water restrictions are planned for the fall while service is transitioned over to the replacement pipe.
As Spring begins, I am focused on ensuring Calgarians have strong and reliable infrastructure. I had the pleasure of joining Mayor Farkas in kicking off the Spring Pothole Blitz! I assisted the Mayor and a hardworking City of Calgary crew with filling a pothole in Bowness on 61st Street NW. I operated an asphalt roller and experienced first-hand the work done to fill potholes across the city.
As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please contact my office at Ward1@calgary.ca and if you have any City of Calgary service-related requests, such as potholes or bin pickup issues, please contact 311 at this link:

Bearspaw South Feeder Main Replacement Project:
Stage A Update:
As of April 15, 2026, stage A construction for the replacement project continues to advance and the final microtunneling shaft is beginning construction on 16 Avenue NW, near 44 Street NW.
Both Eastbound lanes on 16 Avenue NW between Monterey Avenue NW and Montgomery Avenue NW will be closed. Single lane traffic on 16 Avenue NW will be maintained in both directions. Access to 16 Avenue NW from Monterey Avenue NW and Montgomery Avenue NW will remain open. The closure began on April 13, 2026 and will last approximately 2 weeks. The closure is expected to be back in place throughout May and June.
Stage B Update:
Stage B of the BSFM Replacement Project, spanning from 73 Street NW to 87 Street NW, is expected to begin in May 2026 using an open-cut method along 34 Avenue. The replacement feeder main, consisting of an additional steel pipe, will be installed parallel to the existing pipe.
Construction to connect the replacement pipe to the existing water pipe will begin the week of May 11, 2026. This will occur on between 33 and 34 Avenue on 83 Street NW and on 77 Street NW. Construction notices were delivered directly to impacted homes on April 9, 2026. Impacted homes are also being offered the opportunity to book free, independent pre-construction property inspections.
Due to the accelerated pace of the BSFM project, construction details remain subject to change.
Information for Impacted Residents:
Residents and businesses in Bowness, Montgomery and Parkdale, along the feeder main alignment, should anticipate more mail drop updates, construction notices and info sessions. Residents and businesses that have not already done so, can sign up to receive email updates.
Plans are moving forward rapidly and we are committed to enhancing our outreach as we gain a better understanding of community impacts. We appreciate everyone’s patience at this time.
Residents or businesses with questions regarding this project, please contact us directly at BSFMProject@calgary.ca.
