Halloween Safety

Halloween Safety

Halloween is the time of year when all the little ghosts and ghouls get to dress up. They wander through Calgary’s neighbourhoods, knocking on doors and collecting treats. It can be very fun, as long as it’s a safe experience. We have put together safety information to help you and your trick-or-treaters stay safe on Halloween.

Partners for Safety

For almost 30 years the Calgary Partners for Safety, coordinated by Calgary’s Child Magazine, have worked together to keep Halloween safe and fun for everyone. The partners include the Calgary Police Service, Emergency Medical Services,  Calgary Emergency Management Agency, Calgary Fire Department, Calgary Transit, Calgary Community Standards, and Global Calgary.

Fire, Police and EMS will patrol various streets on October 31st to offer assistance to anyone who needs it. Fire stations will be open as safe places for anyone needing help.

Please call 9-1-1 if there is an emergency or if you are in need of help.

Halloween tips for trick-or-treaters and their parents

  • A bright costume with reflector tape will make children more visible to drivers
  • Costumes should not be highly flammable, or interfere with easy walking
  • If children are wearing masks, the masks shouldn’t interfere with their vision: better yet, use face paint instead.
  • Try to trick-or-treat while it’s still bright outside
  • An adult should accompany younger children
  • Older kids who are mature enough to be unsupervised should travel in a group
  • Parents should help their kids plan a route and set a time to be home
  • Remind children never to go beyond the doorway and not to talk to strangers
  • Parents should also remind children to stay on the sidewalk and only cross the street at intersections
  • Let your children know not to take shortcuts through alleys and abandoned areas, but to stay in populated, well-lit areas
  • It's a good idea for kids to carry a flashlight and to have a cell phone or some change for a pay phone
  • An adult should inspect the candy before consumption

Halloween tips for homeowners

  • Ensure your front entrance is well-lit to welcome trick-or-treaters
  • Keep front lawns and pathways clear of obstacles
  • Keep pets contained and away from the front entrance
  • Avoid using real candles and consider using battery-operated candles or glow sticks
  • Turn on your porch light to let children know they’re welcome (or vice versa)

Halloween tips for drivers

  • When driving, slow down and be extra cautious in residential areas
  • Drive defensively - expect children to dart out from between parked cars
  • Watch carefully for people using pedestrian crossings
